Future Technologies of Disruption: The Evolution of Content

Presenting Silicon Valley Legend Kevin Kelly

The audience has been shifting for decades, but it’s not done yet. In fact, what we formerly called the “audience” will change more in the next 20 years than it has in the last 20.

This new audience holds the chief asset in the new economy: attention.

Attention is being directed by a handful of technological forces in unexpected ways. Innovations such as big data, the quantified self, location tracking, peerage, and real time can all be understood as attention technology.

Kevin Kelly, senior maverick & founding executive editor of Wired will present the general trajectories of where the new audience is headed in the next decades. He’ll describe how social media will continue to evolve, and what that means, and suggest ways to optimize the best characteristics of this attention economy.

Embodied Cognition in Consumer Behavior

Numerous researchers are currently exploring an essential link between physiological experiences and social perceptions, behaviour, and judgments. Generally captured within the domain of embodied cognition, these findings suggest that our metaphorical understanding of concepts are grounded in, and can be influenced by, the physical experiences of our environment.

Dr. Andrew Perkins, Assistant Professor of Marketing, Ivey Business School will present a primer on embodied cognition, including a number of recently published findings related to marketing and consumer behaviour.

It’s a new era. Four future trends reveal how to engage consumers, now!

Welcome to a new, consumer-first world.

The novelty of the Internet has faded – today consumers use and depend on their various devices and access in a very human way. Natasha Hritzuk, Senior Director of Global Consumer Insights, will present the Microsoft Digital Trends that examine the consumer/technology relationship. The trends explore current user behaviours and desires around data, privacy, creativity, and the ways technology can enhance our lives.

From trading to creating, serendipity to sensory arousal, Microsoft Digital Trends shows consumers are ready for ‘technology as usual’ to disappear. Attendees will leave the session with a better understanding of how consumers expectations towards technology and brands have matured. Consumers around the world are increasingly aware that technology is capable of making their lives richer and more rewarding, and in doing so, consumers also have an increased expectation in the role brands can play. Placing the consumer first is a necessary tactic for survival.

By taking these trends on-board, marketers will be able to effectively future-proof their brands. They will learn about the growing importance of data, the need to having a transparent and respectful data handling policy and ultimately how to make every interaction with their customers necessary, offering additive value that is relevant and meaningful not hopeful.

‘On strategy’ mean the end of creativity?

At a time when business margins are under increasing pressure and value-seeking customers are more price conscious than ever, there is tremendous pressure on creative departments. Not only must they engage the customer and break through the clutter they must also generate short term sales: clients may want brand development but may not be able to fund it.

How Digital Technology is Helping and Hampering Memory

The nature of human memory is changing. What we choose to remember – if not what we’re actually able to remember – has changed as digital tools allow us to delegate more to devices and the web. In one generation we’ve gone from remembering half a dozen phone numbers to perhaps two (our own and our partner’s). We’ve moved from a photograph being a carefully-used tool and an indelible record of a moment in time, to a cost-free aide-memoire for everything from billboard ads to a fun night out. And we are shifting from a world where content is tangible, to one in which it isn’t.

Arguably, the essential motivations around memory remain the same: a fear of missing out, of forgetting moments and experiences. The ways in which these needs are expressed have changed, though, and reflect advantages of recent technological developments (video cameras in every phone, Pinterest, etc). At the same time, they create new gaps and vulnerabilities in our lives: if we take a photograph of every moment, do we remember it better or worse? And if a computer failure loses all our digital photos, how much has gone with them?
