Is the Internet the Answer?

Debating its Future Influence on Marketing and our Lives.

Join us at the opening luncheon for FFWD: Advertising and Marketing Week 2015 for what is sure to be a stimulating, controversial and significant debate about the future of Internet communication and the ever-growing influence it wields over our industry and lives.

In 2015, the Internet will turn 46. The World Wide Web will be 26 years old. No longer mere novelties or the province of geeks, the Internet and the Web now form an integral communication tool. We now can communicate with each other around the world and down the block; we are starting to communicate with our homes, our appliances, and systems. In 2012, the United Nations’ Human Rights Council unanimously resolved that Internet access is an essential human right.

In what is sure to be a spirited and memorable debate moderated by Mathew Ingram, Senior Writer, GigaOm.com, two leading minds will lock horns and share their insights:

Andrew Keen, “The Antichrist of Silicon Valley” and author of the new book, The Internet is Not the Answer, will lay bare his his skepticism and concern about what the Internet and associated technologies are doing to our lives.

Mitch Joel, “Rock Star of Digital Marketing,” noted author of CTRL ALT Delete and President of Twist Image will take the opposite tack, expounding optimistically on the massive potential of such technological change.

Each ticket includes a copy of Andrew’s new book, The Internet is Not the Answer and he will be signing them after the debate.

Informing Creativity: From Big Data to Applied Data

For years Big Data has been all the buzz. But as data becomes more available and diverse, we enhance efforts to structure and analyze with opportunities to inspire and activate. Open and shared data spark co-creation and opportunities to hack the expected.

How do you tap the unexpected? How do you use data to energize creativity in the moment and inform real-time relevance and experience? When we shift our data disciplines from hindsight to foresight, we realize the value of data as a connective tissue.

We believe that 2015 is the year where we shift from Big Data to Applied Data – where we can connect what matters with what inspires. In this session, we will explore how to:

•  Leverage search and social data to inform applied experiences such as a content topography.
•  Recalibrate for active participation and real-time engagement.
•  Activate and package real-time insights for creative inspiration.
•  Tap emerging data sets from social machines to wearables to instrumented intelligence.

During and following this presentation, SapientNitro experts will host an online chat to dig deeper into applied data and creativity in the real-time world.

Making connections in the age of connectivity

Mobile devices have become indispensable tools, somewhat inseparable from our everyday moments. Our current behaviours indicate that future generations of mobile users will only expect more from the technologies they see developing around them. As their relationships with technology mature, many consumers now expect more from the devices that have transformed them into accessible brands. As consumers continue to change the face of digital consumption, they can quickly become the hashtag, engaged and analysed based on how they share, what they post, and who their online content reaches.

With millions of users separated by the technology that is meant to bring them closer together, the aim of this session will be to present current and upcoming Canadian digital and social trends associated to mobile technologies and identify where emerging themes and concerns exist with various user groups. This discussion will highlight consumer focuses, online influences, and how relationships with communication devices, media, and inter-personal relationships have converged using a variety of social platforms and screens.

Mining Consumer-Generated Product Reviews to Automate Market Structure Analysis

The increasing popularity of social media has led to exponential growth in user-generated content (UGC), such as consumer-generated product reviews, that could be highly beneficial for market intelligence. Due to the large volume and unstructured nature of UGC, it creates both a unique opportunity and notable challenges for academics and practitioners.

To advance market structure analyses, this study combines marketing theories and advances in computational linguistics to obtain deeper consumer and market insights from free-form product reviews. An innovative text analytics method integrates text mining and sentiment analysis techniques to automate market structure analyses. To demonstrate the validity of this method, the authors conduct an intensive empirical study and implement a prototype system to analyze tablet computer reviews from Amazon.com. The method offers additional insights, such as consumer product usage situations and consumer sentiments toward product attributes.

Disruptable Me: The Art of Creative Change

Everyone talks about change. But as Geneva Film Co.’s James Stewart has observed, change is a mild breeze compared to the storm represented by its bolder older sibling: Disruption. As a long-time leader in the art and science of visual storytelling, James has had not just a front-row seat to the power of disruption — but a fully-immersive, interactive digital one.

In this candid and insightful presentation, James describes the circumstances that make brands, agencies (and individuals) ripe for disruption and how technology is making it easier to be disruptive. He draws parallels between his own experiences in digital, 3D, VR and AR and from brands large and small. He examines the universal truths behind successful disruptions, dissects unsuccessful ones, and lays out a clear case for how to disrupt your world, or to defend yourself against an approaching storm, even if no one can see it. Yet.

How to Delight Users and Drive Business with Mobile

It’s likely that the most sophisticated piece of technology you own is currently in your pocket. Over half of Canadians who use their mobile device to research a product or service, will make a purchase within the hour – and most of these purchases will happen in store. The smartphone has dramatically transformed our shopping behaviors, but is overwhelmingly underutilized by marketers in Canada. Others have woken up to this consumer reality, but struggle with how to focus their efforts and creating a seamless mobile UX.

Adam Green from Google Canada’s Agency Team will challenge marketers’ perceptions of mobile, and share his Fantastic Five to win in mobile with examples from brands that are doing it right — and driving business in the process.

The Power of Content Marketing

Canadians access an average of three to four digital devices daily. Many are already engaging with and sharing branded content across screens. To reach this new generation of digital natives through content marketing, it’s important to understand how to connect with them and what messages resonate. Yahoo and Tumblr developed research to understand these new digital daily habits. “Content Marketing: Best Practices” provides the insights you need to create content marketing that hits the mark and successfully drives brand awareness.

Starting A StartUp: Theory and Practice

Marketers are well known for their entrepreneurial spirit. As a result, many find themselves breaking out on their own, either as freelance creative, consultants or even starting up their own agency or firm.

In this session Prof. Ken Wong will provide a framework for evaluating your “new business” idea. He’ll then call upon some experts – a fellow member of the Hall of Legends and two that Marketing just named “Best 30 Under 30″ – whose consulting, agency and promotional startups have achieved great success to see how the model holds up and to explore the personal side – good and bad – of creating a startup or working on your own.

Panelists:
 • David Kincaid, Founder, Level 5 Strategy Group
 • Bram Warshafsky, Founder and Partner, 5Crowd

Mastering Adaptive Marketing

Social media has changed the game for marketers. Most marketers are well versed in how to plan brand activity months or years in advance—but the new digital landscape offers brands the opportunity to remain top-of-mind by catching the evolving waves of social conversations.

Brands that have taken to the new environment quickly have adopted adaptive marketing. But many marketers and agency partners remain unclear about a brand’s role in evolving consumer conversations across the digital media landscape.

This presentation will address marketers’ most common question: what is adaptive marketing and why do brands need it?

The presentation will feature successful adaptive content marketing initiatives from leading North American brands over the last 18 months and outline capabilities required to make this form of marketing an integral part of the broader marketing efforts.

Programmatic – A Creative Playground

It is well known that Programmatic Advertising uses BIG data insights to make quick decisions about what high quality, online media to buy. In the future all media will be purchased with this method because of superior targeting and real time access.

What isn’t so well known is that Programmatic provides deeper benefits which can positively enhance all elements of a marketer’s campaign. This effect is becoming known as programmatic branding and makes use of creative services:

•  It takes advantage of a rich format inventory.
•  It opens up new forms of creativity: site retargeting, dynamic creative and sequential storytelling.
•  It allows vendors to provide seamless execution across screens, formats and inventory types.
•  It gives creative agencies the chance to add to their creative output and tailor their message to engage different customer segments.
•  The creative can adapt to complement the contextual environment.

“Real time, real people, real results.”

Moderator: David Jowett, President, V7International, Cossette Media

Speakers:
•  Sam Ashken, Planning Director, the Barbarian Group, N.Y.
•  Jay Crystal, Head of Strategy, AOL Platforms
